Seeking Advice: Financial Dilemma Between Supporting Family and Buying Our First Home

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m in a bit of a bind and could really use some advice. My name is Anna, and my husband, Logan, and I are currently facing a difficult financial decision.

Here’s the situation: My mom, Charlotte, has generously offered to contribute a significant amount of money towards the down payment for a small apartment (kawalerka) that Logan and I have been eyeing for a while. This would be our first home, and it’s something we’ve been dreaming about for years.

However, Logan’s father, Walter, has recently fallen seriously ill. Logan feels strongly that we should use the money my mom is offering to help cover his father’s medical expenses instead. I completely understand his perspective and want to support his family, but I’m also worried about missing out on this opportunity to secure our own place.

I’m torn between wanting to honor my mom’s intention to help us get started on our own and supporting Logan’s desire to take care of his father. Both options are important, and I don’t want to cause any tension or resentment in our family.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you navigate it? Any advice on how to balance these competing priorities would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help!

Best,

Anna
