“You Only Call When You Need a Babysitter”: That’s What I Told My Son
Ariana sat quietly in her living room, the soft ticking of the clock punctuating the silence that had settled over the house. It was a Thursday afternoon, a time she usually cherished with her granddaughter, Zoey. However, today was different. Today, she had finally voiced a painful truth to her son, Joshua.
“You only call me when you need a babysitter,” Ariana had said during their last phone call. The words had hung heavy in the air, charged with years of unspoken frustration. Joshua had paused, the silence on his end of the line speaking volumes before he had hastily made an excuse and hung up.
Ariana’s relationship with her son had been strained ever since he and Madeline divorced two years ago. Madeline had always been the bridge between Ariana and Joshua, facilitating conversations and smoothing over the rough patches that seemed to appear more frequently as time went on. But after the divorce, that bridge had crumbled, and Ariana found herself more and more isolated from her son’s life.
Zoey, a bright-eyed six-year-old with an infectious laugh, was the one thread still connecting them. Ariana adored her granddaughter and cherished the days she spent with her. But as much as she loved these moments, they were also a painful reminder of her son’s indifference. Joshua rarely visited unless it was to drop off Zoey or pick her up. Their conversations were brief, functional, and painfully devoid of any real emotional connection.
Today, as Ariana sat alone, she couldn’t help but replay the conversation with Joshua over in her mind. She had hoped her words would spark some kind of realization in him, some acknowledgment of the growing gap between them. Instead, it had only seemed to push him further away.
The house felt emptier than usual. The pictures on the walls, capturing happier times, seemed to mock her current solitude. She missed the days when Joshua was younger, when he would come to her with his problems, his achievements, and his everyday stories. Now, she was lucky to get a superficial update on his life, usually centered around his work or Zoey’s latest activities—never about how he was really feeling or what he was going through.
As the hours ticked by, Ariana’s phone remained silent. There was no call from Joshua, no message to check in or to apologize. The realization that her words might have driven a permanent wedge between them settled in her stomach like a stone.
Night fell, and Ariana prepared for bed, the loneliness of the house enveloping her. She lay in the darkness, listening to the quiet sounds of the night, each creak and whisper a reminder of the isolation she felt. She thought about Zoey, sleeping soundly at her father’s house, blissfully unaware of the adult complexities surrounding her.
Ariana knew she would continue to be there for Zoey, no matter what. But as for Joshua, she was beginning to accept that their relationship might never be what it once was. The pain of that realization was sharp and deep, but perhaps it was time to face it. Maybe, in time, Joshua would see what his neglect had cost them both. But for now, Ariana had to contend with the silence, the empty rooms, and the growing distance between her and her son, a distance that felt more insurmountable with each passing day.
