“I’m Deeply Hurt by My Mother-in-Law. She Left Her Apartment to My Husband’s Brother, and My Husband Got Nothing”: I Just Feel It’s Unfair

It was a chilly autumn evening when Hazel decided it was time to reveal the contents of her will to the family. The living room was filled with tense anticipation as family members, including her sons James and Kenneth, along with their wives Ruby and Delilah, respectively, gathered around. The crackling fire was the only sound for a few moments before Hazel began to speak.

“As you all know, I’ve been thinking about the future a lot lately,” Hazel started, her voice steady but showing a hint of emotion. “I want to make sure that when I’m no longer here, everything I’ve worked for is passed on appropriately.”

Ruby, married to James, Hazel’s eldest son, held her husband’s hand tightly. They had been struggling financially, and Ruby secretly hoped that some of the inheritance, particularly Hazel’s spacious three-bedroom apartment in the city, would come their way. It would be a significant relief and a chance to provide a better future for their two young children.

Hazel continued, “I have decided to leave the three-bedroom apartment to Kenneth.” A heavy silence fell over the room. Ruby felt James stiffen beside her. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. All the hopes of securing a better future seemed to crumble in that instant.

“And to James,” Hazel went on, “I leave my collection of antique furniture and my car.” The disparity in the value of these inheritances was stark and palpable. Ruby’s heart sank. The antique furniture, though valuable to collectors, was not something they could easily convert into the much-needed cash, and the car, while useful, was old and not worth much.

Ruby tried to mask her disappointment and anger, but it was challenging. She felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her—frustration, betrayal, and a deep sense of injustice. Why would Hazel favor Kenneth so blatantly? Was there something James had done to deserve less?

The rest of the evening passed in a blur. Polite conversations masked the tension, but Ruby could hardly focus. On their drive home, the silence in the car was deafening. James was clearly upset but tried to hide it, focusing on the road ahead.

Once home, Ruby couldn’t hold back any longer. “How could your mother do this to us?” she asked James, her voice a mix of anger and desperation.

James sighed, running his hands through his hair. “I don’t know, Ruby. I truly don’t know. Maybe she thinks Kenneth needs it more, or perhaps she doesn’t see how much we’re struggling.”

“But it’s not fair, James! It’s not just about the apartment. It’s about her showing that she doesn’t care about our needs,” Ruby argued, her voice breaking.

James nodded, his expression somber. “I know, and it hurts. But there’s not much we can do. Mom has made up her mind.”

The conversation lingered into the night, with no resolution in sight. Ruby lay awake, feeling a mix of sadness and resentment. The decision had not only impacted their financial future but also left a deep crack in their family relations. It was a wound that Ruby feared might never fully heal.
