Finding Strength in Faith: How I Handled My Son’s Bold Request
Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs at you when you least expect it. One of the most challenging moments for me came when my son Bruce, who had just gotten married to Zoey, asked me to take out a mortgage for them. I was floored by his boldness. I mean, who does that? But instead of reacting impulsively, I turned to God for guidance.
I remember the day vividly. Bruce and Zoey came over for dinner, and after we finished eating, Bruce dropped the bombshell. “Mom, Zoey and I have been looking at houses, and we found the perfect one. But we need you to take out a mortgage for us,” he said, almost casually.
I felt a mix of emotions—shock, anger, and disappointment. How could my own son ask me to shoulder such a huge financial burden? I needed time to process this, so I told them I’d think about it and let them know.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. My mind was racing with thoughts and worries. I decided to pray. “God, give me the wisdom to handle this situation,” I whispered. I spent the next few days in deep prayer and reflection, asking God for guidance.
One morning, after a particularly heartfelt prayer session, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was as if God was telling me that it was okay to say no, but to do it with love and understanding. I realized that Bruce and Zoey were young and probably didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of what they were asking.
I invited Bruce over for coffee the next day. “Bruce,” I began, “I love you and Zoey very much, but taking out a mortgage is a huge responsibility that I’m not prepared to take on. However, I’m here to support you in other ways. Let’s sit down and figure out a plan that works for both of you.”
Bruce looked disappointed but nodded in understanding. We spent the next few hours discussing their options, budgeting, and even looking into financial counseling. It wasn’t the answer he wanted, but it was the one he needed.
Through prayer and faith, I found the strength to handle a difficult situation with grace and wisdom. It taught me that sometimes saying no is an act of love, and that God is always there to guide us through life’s challenges.
