Help! My Son Wants Me to Take Out a Mortgage for Him and His Wife
Hey everyone,
I really need some advice and thought I’d turn to you all for some help. My son, William, recently got married to a lovely girl named Gianna. They seem really happy together, which is great, but now they’ve hit me with a request that’s left me feeling pretty conflicted.
So, here’s the deal: William and Gianna want to buy a house, but they don’t have enough credit history or savings to get a mortgage on their own. Instead of waiting and saving up, they’ve asked me to take out a mortgage loan for them. I mean, I love my son and want to support him, but this feels like a huge ask. I can’t believe the audacity, to be honest.
I told them I needed some time to think about it, but I’m really leaning towards saying no. I don’t want to jeopardize my own financial stability, and I feel like they should learn to be more responsible with their money. But at the same time, I don’t want to come off as unsupportive or cause any tension in our relationship.
What would you do if you were in my shoes? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you handle it? Any advice on how to say no without causing a family rift would be super helpful.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Madeline
