Seeking Advice: Ex-Spouse’s Return After 16 Years Due to Illness
Dear Society Members,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to seek your advice on a personal matter that has recently arisen in my life. After 16 years of separation, my ex-husband, Sean, has come back into my life. He has been diagnosed with a serious illness and has asked if he could stay with me for a few weeks while he receives treatment nearby.
The complication arises with our sons, Brian and Jeffrey, who are not in favor of Sean staying with us. They have not had much contact with their father since our separation and are uncomfortable with the idea of him coming back into our lives under these circumstances.
I am torn between wanting to help Sean in his time of need and respecting my sons’ feelings. The situation is further complicated by the emotional and logistical adjustments that his presence would require.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or perspectives from those who may have experienced similar situations or can offer insights into handling such a delicate family matter. How can I support Sean without alienating my sons? Is there a compassionate yet practical approach to this situation?
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I look forward to your thoughts and suggestions.
Warm regards,
Victoria
